Gig Sketches

A Bull, Yr Poetry, Kermes and Crywank at The Hare & Hounds, Birmingham, 10th October 2018

A Bull (Andy from Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam), Yr Poetry, Kermes and Crywank at The Hare & Hounds, Birmingham, 10th October 2018

Great line up at the Hare & Hounds on Wednesday night! Yr Poetry had a telephone microphone which I wasn’t quick enough to draw, and Kermes were much more energetic and I regret not trying to capture their front woman with multiple faster guesture drawings. Hopefully I can see them another time!

Giant & The Georges, Exhailers and Ghum at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham, 11th September 2018

Unfortunately because of a prebooked train ticket I missed most of Future Fires set and didn’t get a chance to draw them - here’s a link to a sketch of them in February.

Exhailers were wearing stickers on their foreheads this time! They’re for Not Normal, Not OK - a campaign in the West Midlands addressing sexual harassment in the live music scene. For more information visit www.notnormalnotok.com

Ghum are on a UK tour this week! You can see them in Glasgow, Sheffield, Bristol, Cardiff & London.

Janelle Monae @ Manchester Academy, 10th September 2018

Janelle Monae @ Manchester Academy, 10th September 2018

I travelled up to Manchester to see Janelle Monae last night (no warm up band just 1hour 1/2 of the main act). Sorry I didn’t get to sketch all her amazing musicians, her set up of outfits and dancers kept changing so it was difficult to keep up! The show had an incredible atmosphere with fans dancing around, it was wonderful. I love how she talks and interacts with her audience throughout.

I’m actually compiling a Janelle Monae Fanzine at the moment. It’s open to writers/artists but the extended deadline is coming up this Sunday. If you’d like your work included please send ready to print files because the zine is scheduled to launch at the Bristol Comic & Zine Fair in early October. I don’t mind if you send something you drew earlier in the year! Just so long as it meets the file size requirements as anything too small won’t be able to be printed. More info and FAQ at www.thatmusiczine.tumblr.com/janellemonae Thank you!

Screaming Females and Scrap Brain at The Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, 2nd September 2018

Screaming Females and Scrap Brain at The Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, 2nd September 2018

I headed over to the Hare & Hounds straight from Godiva Festival (gig sketches here) Unfortunately I was running a little late and only managed to see the last couple of Sunshine Frisbee Laserbeam's songs.

Afriquoi, The Neville Staple Band and Stealing Sheep (with Marching Band) at at Godiva Festival, Coventry, Sunday 2nd September 2018

Afriquoi, The Neville Staple Band and Stealing Sheep (with Marching Band) at  at Godiva Festival, Coventry, Sunday 2nd September 2018

Unfortunately I missed the beginning of Afiquoi's set because I headed over to the festival straight from work. The stage times were running late so I started sketching anyway, but I missed some band members! Sorry!

Neville Staple's band continued to play after a difficult weekend with a message about knife crime. Read more on the BBC.

Stealing Sheep brought portable synths and a marching band to the festival! I filmed a little over on Instagram. I had to keep walking backwards and running after them to draw which was an interesting challenge. Their performance was hosted by Boudica Festival, a weekend focusing on women in music on 6th October.

I then headed over to the Hare & Hounds for Screaming Females - I'll post the sketches from that show in a separate post!

Gaz Coombes, Rae Morris, Ady Suleiman and Little Comets at Godiva Festival, Coventry, Saturday 1st September 2018

I've drawn a couple of these bands before - Gaz Coombes at Moseley Folk Festival in 2015.

When I last saw Rae Morris it was pre-music blog, but I was still sketching bands back then. Last time she was stationary at a keyboard, but this time she danced around the stage. I tried to capture some of her movements in faster gesture poses.

As Mamas, Nonsuch, The Americas, Brain Food and Dead Coast @ Kaleidoscope & Planet Art Project present Bank Holiday All-Dayer @ The Night Owl, Birmingham, 26th August 2018

Kaleidoscope is a regular event at The Night Owl, featuring live music and artists. Thank you to everyone who bought comics & zines from my table throughout the day. In my sketches I tried to capture some of the cool light displays at this particular event. Sorry I had to leave early due to Sunday train times and missed sketching Mothers Earth Experiment. The next free entry Kaleidoscope event will be on Thursday 6th September.

I'll be taking comics and zines to another show in Digbeth in a couple of weeks - High Vis Festival on Saturday 8th September! Please come say hi! I'll have free mini comics to hand out! For an up to date list of comic cons and zine fairs throughout autumn please visit the events section of this website.

If you're interested in getting involved in making a music zine - theres still a couple of days left to send me something for the Janelle Monae Fanzine I'm compiling. For more information please visit www.thatmusiczine.tumblr.com/janellemonae

Bodega and Vital Idles at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham, 11th July 2018

Bodega and Vital Idles at The Sunflower Lounge, Birmingham, 11th July 2018

Stage times ran late because of the football, I have to admit I was getting kinda tired and I don't think I managed to capture Bodega quite right. They were such an expressive band, I hope I get a chance to sketch them again sometime! Vital Idles were a great choice for warm up act at this show, I recommend you check out their music if you like Bodega.

Haim and Maggie Rogers at O2 Apollo, Manchester, 11th June 2018

Haim and Maggie Rogers at O2 Apollo, Manchester, 11th June 2018

Hey! Sorry for the delay scanning gig sketches this week. I was away at the beginning of the week and then in the process of replacing a new laptop so it took a little bit of time to install software and scanners and things but everything is ready to go!

My sister wanted to sit in the circle to watch Haim so I had to adapt to faster gesture drawing rather than working slower trying to pin down a likeness (we were just too far from the stage to see details)

I’ve been given a table through the waiting list for Glasgow Comic Con on 30th June! I had an amazing time there last year so I’m really looking forward to it! The return of Birmingham Zine Festival is on Sunday 1st July so I’ve booked the overnight coach so not to miss out!

Anna Burch, Hatchie and Hoopla Blue at The Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, 7th May 2018

Anna Burch, Hatchie and Hoopla Blue at The Hare and Hounds, Birmingham, Monday 7th May 2018

Winding down a beautiful summery day sketching Anna Burch, Hatchie and Hoopla Blue at the Hare and Hounds.

Anna Burch will be playing in Glasgow (with Hatchie) and London this week, and then back in the summer for more UK dates and festivals! (including The Great Escape with Hatchie)

Hoopla Blue played some new music and mentioned recording stuff soon so look out for that!

Back over at the Hare & Hounds for Goat Girl later so hopefully more sketches to come!

About

I started sketching bands on location to practice drawing guitars and musicians to inform my music themed comics while I was at University. I enjoyed the process of documenting live events this way, and continued to sketch bands until 'gig sketches' became it's own project.

That Music Zine is a tumblr blog where I post all the sketches with links to songs and when I have some free time I compile them into printed zines.
